ON CLAUSEWITZ
The erudite character pictured is Carl von Clausewitz. He was a Prussian Officer who fought in the Napoleonic wars. He is most famous for his magnum opus On War (Vom Kreige in German). The work was left unfinished at the time of his death in 1831 and posthumously edited and published by his wife; notably, she also wrote the introduction.
The study and adoption of his tome was begun in earnest with Helmuth Von Moltke the Elder, the long standing Chief of Staff of the Prussian Army during the Austro Prussian and Franco-Prussian wars. The work continues to be studied today by academics, military theorists, and many western military officers. A common phrase with reference to On War and the preponderance for its misinterpretation is that it is "often quoted, rarely read".
Carl Von Clausewitz and his work On War has had a great influence on the way modern, particularly western, militaries practice war. It is for this reason that this podcast, an exploration of war and warfare, is named The Dead Prussian. This podcast will endeavour to study war and warfare as thoroughly as Clausewitz did.
